Birm filter media
What is birm?
Birm® is an effective and economical filter material for reducing dissolved iron and manganese compounds from raw water supplies. It can be used in gravity or pressure water filtration systems. Birm filter media acts as an insoluble catalyst to enhance the reaction between dissolved oxygen (D.O.) and iron compounds.
In groundwater, dissolved iron is often in the iron bicarbonate state because there is too much free and unfilterable carbon dioxide. Birm, acting as a catalyst between oxygen and dissolved iron compounds, enhances the oxidation reaction of Fe++ to Fe+++ and produces iron hydroxide which precipitates and can be easily filtered. Birm’s physical properties make it an excellent filter media, easily cleaned by backwashing to remove precipitates. Birm filter media is not consumed in the iron removal operation and therefore offers a huge economic advantage over many other iron removal methods.
Physical properties
- Black brown color
- Bulk density: 40-45 lbs./cu. ft.
- Mesh size: 10 x 40
- Specific gravity: 2.0 gm/cc
- Effective size: 0.48 mm
- Uniformity coefficient: 2.7
Features of Birm:
- Acts as an insoluble catalyst to remove Iron, Manganese, Arsenic and some soluble heavy metal compounds in water sources.
- The surface can be easily cleaned by backwashing to remove precipitated substances
- Characteristics: granular, dark brown, hard, dry and loose
- Difficult to dissolve in iron reactions, long usage time and low material consumption
- Birm granules are a manganese dioxide MnO2 coated aluminum silicate filter material. This coating is a highly oxidizing compound that acts as an insoluble catalyst to enhance the oxidation reactions of Fe2+ to Fe3+ and produce Fe(OH)3 iron hydroxide that precipitates (alum) and adheres to the surface of birm’s layers.
Operating conditions
- The alkalinity must be greater than twice the combined sulfate and chloride concentration.
- Maximum water temperature: 100°F/38°C
- Water pH range: 6.8-9.0
- The dissolved oxygen (D.O.) content must be at least 15% of the iron content and 29% of the manganese content.
- Birm bed depth: 30-36 inches (750-900mm).
- Backwash speed: 10-12 gpm/sq. ft.
- Expansion during backwashing: 20-40% of Birm bed depth (minimum)
- Filtration rate: 3.5-5 gpm/sq.ft (8.55 – 12.2 m3/m2.h), intermittent flow rates and/or favorable local conditions may allow high filtration rates than
Restrict operating conditions for input water
- Free chlorine concentration (residual chlorine) is below 0.5 ppm, which means that if you are filtering municipal water, or previously treated chlorinated of raw water, Birm is not recommended.
- Hydrogen Sulfide should be removed before exposure to Birm media
- Oil: None
- Polyphosphate: None
Birm’s application
- Under the right conditions, there is no need to purchase chemicals for maintenance. Regeneration is not necessary.
- Iron removal efficiency is extremely high.
- Labor costs are negligible: only periodic backwashing is required.
- Durable material with long life and wide temperature range.
- Weighs only 40-45 lbs./cu. ft. (640-720kg/m3)
To effectively remove impurities from water, you should combine gravel, quartz sand, activated carbon, etc. In addition, you need to replace this Birm within 2 to 3 years to increase water filtration efficiency.
Above is basic information about the characteristics, uses and how to use Birm effectively. If you want to buy quality water filter Birm seeds at a good price, please contact Song Phung Environmental Company immediately for quick advice and support!
