Sodium Hypochlorite (NaClO)
What is Sodium Hypochlorite?
Javel water, also known as Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), is a solution created from the reaction of chlorine with sodium hydroxide solution. These two reactants are the main co-products of most chlor-alkali cells. Sodium hypochlorite, commonly known as bleach, has a variety of uses and is an excellent disinfectant/antibacterial agent.
Physical properties of Sodium Hypochlorite:
- Javen water has the chemical formula NaClO (Sodium hypochlorite), the molecular formula is Na+ Cl–O–.
- This is a yellow solution, smells like chlorine gas, is unstable and easily decomposed by light.
- The molar mass of Javen is 74.44 g/mol.
- Melting temperature is 18 °C, boiling temperature is 102.2 °C
- The specific gravity of Javen water is 1.20 and the density is 1.11 g/Ml.
Chemical properties of Sodium Hypochlorite:
- Javen water is a strong oxidizing agent and can react with protic acids such as hydrochloric acid.
- The products produced after the reaction are salt and toxic chlorine gas.
- It also reacts with several other acids to form hypochlorous acid (HClO). In water, Javen is broken down into Na+ and Cl- ions. It also decomposes into NaCl and O2.
- Javen reacts with acids to form chloride salts and gases such as chlorine, carbon dioxide, etc.
Advantages of Sodium Hypochlorite :
Applications of Sodium Hypochlorite :
- The main application of Javel water is in the field of water treatment as a disinfectant and decolorizer for water.
- Wastewater treatment: use Javen water to disinfect and oxidize wastewater from industrial factories, domestic wastewater in residential and urban areas.
- Water treatment: use Javen water to disinfect and oxidize groundwater and surface water sources.
